What is Virtualisation?

Virtualisation lets you run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine, sharing the resources of that single computer across multiple environments. Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and multiple applications on the same physical computer.

What is all the fuss about? Why are so many organisations running virtualised environments.

  • Reduce Capital cost reducing the amount of hardware you need.
  • Increase energy efficiency through less hardware . Reduce energy costs by up to 80%.
  • Power down servers without affecting applications or users.
  • Dramatically improve disaster recovery times and deliver high availability throughout the network. In a traditional environment if your server crashes the amount of time to recover could be 8 to 48 hours which means major downtime in an organisation. Running a virtualized environment means your network can be back within minutes. All virtual machines are portable which means your entire servers are now portable.
  • Improved desktop management and security ensuring faster deployment of desktops and fewer support calls due to application conflicts.
  • Virtualised servers can be deployed within minutes which in a non virtualisation world could tale you days or weeks to deploy.

Real Live clients who are enjoying the benefits of a virtualised environment.

Computerheads worked closely with The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) to virtualise their servers. VMware was chosen as the preferred Hypervisor platform. The ACF have consolidated over seven virtual machines onto two physical servers and have enjoyed the reduced carbon footprint that their organisation is now able to achieve. They have also configured all machines with complete disaster recoverability capability with the use of High Availability and Distributed Resource Scheduler functionality. Any new virtual servers can now also be deployed in less than five minutes saving the Australian Conservation Foundation time and money.

Master Builders Association of Victoria recently moved onto the new VSphere 4.0 platform, with Blade Servers running in their DataCentre and offsite Disaster Recovery capability, the process of server virtualisation and consolidation has dramatically changed the way their IT department functions. More proactive tasks can be performed, the dependence on physical hardware removed; as a result of this hardware independence servers are easily moved across VMWare hosts. Critical applications run as virtual machines with full redundancy capability, dramatically improving their availability.
